Stunning (spoiler-free) from Dan, 01/06/14I have seen Derren Brown twice before, and whilst the last show Svengali was good, it lacked...something. I suspect that something was Andy Nyman, who is Derrens regular collaborator. It was with Nyman that Derren produced what I think of as his best live material, the pinnacle of which has been, for me, An Evening of Wonders. That is until now. I saw Infamous while it toured and was so impressed, not to mention moved by it, that I have booked again to enjoy the spectacle on its last run in London. Brown is a fantastic performer, who is clearly a master of what he does. The show is written rather beautifully, and whilst the show NAME may be a little....tenuous, it does not detract from just how jaw-dropping it is. The finale is a dizzying display of mental discipline and focus, or at least what appears to be mental discipline and focus; lets not forget Brown is first and foremost a conjurer, so what you think you see and what is are rarely going to be the same. You reach a point where you stop trying to understand or work anything out, which is itself a pointless exercise, given that we are not magicians with decades of experience behind us; you simply allow the show to stun you. Possibly the most impressive thing about his shows is that they have a theatrical bent, there is a theme and an arc; as opposed to simply watching a set of tricks, you get a more fully-fleshed, theatrical, emotionally engaging performance. This is what makes Brown unique in his field, and it is what makes Infamous a must-see!
