Fantastic evening, great performances from Durwin99, 02/12/14
Its been years since I went to a concert, so I was extremely lucky that Matt Schofield was playing local to me in Newbury (thank you Matt for supporting this small venue!). Ive only recently discovered his music and like it very much; this concert was just fantastic, very small auditorium, all seats and I was second row so about 12 feet away from the band, great volume from the instruments although the vocal mic I think went through the PA which wasnt nearly as good - Matt himself commented on a problem with the mic... the quality of the band (guitar, drum, bass) was amazing, you could tell all the players were very skilled and it was a real joy as an amateur guitarist & drummer to watch them at work - and I think they all enjoyed it! Matts playing was incredible, he is very adept at seemingly improvising when hes not singing, so what you got was not a note-for-note rendition of the album tracks (like most modern bands), but much, much more - a fluid re-working of some of his best stuff. I loved it. I was also very impressed with the support band, Ben Poole & co - Im sure I have read about Ben in Guitarist magazine but wasnt really aware of him until now; he was a great, vibrant and energetic guitarist, I was quite surprised to see a Tele as his main guitar although he did pull out a Les Paul for his tribute to Gary Moore! I would have bought some CDs from him during the interval (how often do you get to meet the musicians like that?!) if Id had the cash with me, but I will search them out for sure now. This was a great evening of Blues Rock, Im so happy that it all took place 20 minutes from my home in such a nice, small & intimate venue (despite the technical issues & perhaps lack of ambience) - I shall be checking the upcoming artists list from now on!
