The re-furbished Playhouse, Whitley Bay is a superb £8.5m entertainment facility serving the people of North Tyneside and beyond. This 'state of the art' venue is the flagship of a major re-generation project, breathing new life into this famous coastal resort. The venue boasts 628 seats, a 10 seater Corporate viewing suite and a contemporary look and feel to its bars and lounge area, which features a superb sea view. Re-opened in September 2009, the venue boasts an elegant new glass foyer, front of house facilities, box office and bar facilities; and also features a redesigned auditorium with new seating, company room & dressing rooms. The transformation of the venue, situated on Marine Avenue, is a key part of North Tyneside Council's £64million regeneration programme for Whitley Bay.

The Playhouse is a great hall with good acoustics. The layout of the seating means everyone is able to see the act and it has a warm intimate feeling. Only downside on the night was that the upstairs barman was by himself with a long queue of customers.
The Ken Dodd Happiness Show (18/08/14) - Fine
Ken was his usual amusing self and interacted with the audience as the true professional he is. After 90 mins (9pm) he left the stage to be replaced by a female singer to entertain the audience for 30 mins - approx half of the audience left their seats to visit the bar facilities. The itinerary stated that he be back on stage for another 45 mins then an interval (10:15pm). Sorry but we left after hearing two of her songs. I know is traditional for Ken to keep the audience back late and he makes no bones about it, but taking into account the average age of the audience (70), I doubt if many would be there until the end. It would have been better if he did 2 x one hour sets and then wed all be waving our Tickling sticks .
