The Stone Roses are a British rock band who hail from Manchester.
Formed in 1983, the band consists of lead vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, drummer Alan “Reni” Wren and bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield.
They are widely believed to have helped define the British alternative music scene in the late 80s and early 90s following the release of their debut album, ‘The Stone Roses’, which was released in 1989, reaching number five in the UK Album Chart. The album remains to be one of the most important in British music.
‘Second Coming’, the band’s second studio album was released five years later in 1994, peaking at number four in the UK Album Chart. However, the band went through troubled times the following year when Reni left the group just weeks before they were due to go on tour in March 1995. While they found a replacement drummer, Squire departed the following year and the band eventually broke up in October 1996.
Following the break the members all went on to have successful music careers, with Ian Brown releasing a number of hit solo albums, Mani joining rockers Primal Screen as the bassist, and John Squires forming rock band The Seahorses.
Fifteen years after their split, rumours of a reunion began to circulate in 2011 with a tour announced for the following year which culminated with a show in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on July 5th.
A number of appearances at the Isle of Wight Festival and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival followed in 2013, alongside a documentary filmed by ‘This Is England’ director, Shane Meadows, titled ‘ The Stone Roses: Made of Stone’ which was broadcast in cinemas throughout the UK.
On November 2nd 2015 The Stone Roses announced that they would be returning with a number of shows for summer 2016 following speculation after posters featuring the band’s lemon logo began to appear around their hometown of Manchester.
