Venue information

Only six years into our tenure at the Thekla, we have already played host to a variety of excellent live bands and club events as well as scooping the title of "Best Small Venue" in the South West region from the NME in 2011 and 2012.
Thekla is a cargo ship which houses a music venue of the same name, moored in the Mud Dock area of Bristol's Floating Harbour, England. Originally brought to Bristol as the Old Profanity Showboat, it was a late 1982 brainchild of novelist Ki Longfellow-Stanshall, the wife of Vivian Stanshall. The showboat was based on the idea of creating, owning, and running a theatre on a sea-going ship and using it to showcase music of every sort (limited only by the size of the hold), including cabaret, comedy, plays, musicals, and poetry events. The ship also contained an art gallery. During the 1990s, under new management, it was run as a rent-a-nightclub. The ship has now been returned to its original working name of Thekla.

The Temperance Movement (01/10/13) - Even better live than on CD
Sure, buy the CD..... but then make you go and see these guys live. We happened to catch them accidently, supporting The Little Angels at Shepherds Bush and were so blown away by Phils vocals and their sound that they are the only support band Ive ever then gone on to watch headline somewhere else (Thekla, Bristol). Theres a real underlying intelligence to their music that cuts through live. I loved the off mic acoustic interval for instance. Ive heard these guys described as Black Crows throw backs or similar but forget that......... these guys are the real deal and deserve to be massive, both in Europe and the States! I look forward to watching them again....... hopefully next time the venue will be bigger, the tickets harder to get hold of and more expensive to buy...... cause thatll mean theyve really made it!!! :-)
