After moving to Chicago from his native Louisiana in the 1950s, Guy was heavily influenced by the biggest names in the blues movements including Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, in turn himself becoming a great influence on the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.
In 1958 he was signed to Artistic Records after winning a contest against Magic Sam and Otis Rush at the Blue Fame Club before signing with the Cobra label. The rest, as they say, is history. Guy became known for his showmanship, walking through the crowd and playing the guitar behind his back, much to the delight of his audiences.
With a career that spans over 50 years, Guy has also released just as many albums, with fans across the globe being treated to ‘Born To Play Guitar’ in July 2015. Guy has a very impressive number of accolades to his name, including seven GRAMMY Awards, 35 Blues Music Awards and an induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to name but a few.
Guy has previously explained that Muddy Waters’ final request to him was to “keep the damn blues alive”. Watch him continue to do just that this July in this special London show.
