Landing in the top ten as a teenager in the 1980s with songs such as 'Twist in my Sobriety' and 'Good Tradition', Tanita Tikaram has been writing pop folk ever since. Her new albumCloser to the People is a collection of songs of love, passion and determination inspired by Anita O’Day who overcame addiction and discrimination to change the image of female singers in the 30s and 40s.
It’s a strength which can be heard in this album. Vibrant and uplifting, each song is infused with the Jazz and Rhythm and Blues which Tikaram grew up with, with the same emotion and honesty of her previous releases.
'This record is inspired by the blues sound that I've come to love playing with my band. Bobby Irwin, Martin Minning and Matt Radford create a unique groove that is rooted in British rhythm and blues, and soul. I wanted to couple that with the playfulness of contemporary production.' - Tanita Tikaram
