Located in the centre of Newcastle the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre is easily accessible by the city's varied public transport systems. There is a choice of off-street parking nearby and a wealth of restaurants, shops, hotels and local amenities. It is a Grade I listed building.
It opened in 1867 as the Tyne Theatre and Opera House. In 1919 it became a cinema, the Stoll Picture House, the name which can still be seen on the building front and side. It was seriously damaged by fire in 1985, with subsequent rebuilding restoring the Victorian stage machinery.
The Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre is now operated by SMG, and is sponsored by Mill Volvo. SMG also operate and own the Metro Radio Arena and manage the Playhouse Whitley Bay. SMG prides itself on employing local staff within its venues who know the area and its people, and using local suppliers and services to help support the local economy.
SMG Europe have negotiated a 15 year lease agreement for the Grade 1 listed Tyne Theatre Auditorium and Bistro Bar. A new Naming Sponsor has also been secured for the theatre, which has been renamed the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre. This marks a new era for the region's best loved entertainment venue, and the oldest working Victorian Theatre in the World.

Selected reviews for this venue:
The venue was smart, clean and well maintained. The bar was adequately stocked and the standard of service was satisfactory.
The Nutcracker (01/12/14) - Splendid
A very fine performance from a very talented ensemble. The principal female dancer was particularly good, and the standard of all the others was high.
Jane McLeod, 21/11/14
Lovely theatre with friendly, helpful staff. Excellent location ,well served by public transport. Perfect size for this type of gig.
Chris Difford & GlennTilbrook (21/11/14) - An evening with half of Squeeze
Nice mix of chat and songs made for a very entertaining evening. Disappointed to see Glasgow date not included. Note for next tour guys !
Absolutely beautiful theatre, staff were very friendly. The only negative was the seating was a tad uncomfortable. The cushioning on the seats were sparse so you were partly sitting on wood edging.
Tommy Tiernan (05/11/14) - Laughed my blooming socks off
Weve been wanting to see Tommy for quite a while. We were over the moon when we finally got tickets. He didnt disappoint, he was totally hilarious & exceeded all expectations. Would see him again in a heartbeat.
