Fantastic gig, fantastic atmosphere from DavidLid, 14/07/14
Pearl Jams first ever gig at the Leeds First Direct Arena was a triumph (they last played Leeds in 1992). A mixture of the venue, the fans, the group and the unusual set-list combined to give an unforgettable evening. Several records were broken - a 3 hour 20 minute set, 36 songs and 14 encores. Most of the hits were saved for the encores but a handful made it into the main set. The set-list appeared to have been picked at random from all their albums but on closer scrutiny they were concentrating on playing songs from their most obscure albums. Nearly all the reviews on the groups fan forum are saying that this was Pearl Jams best gig EVER, and many of those fans had attended 20 to 30 concerts. A word for the venue. Eddie Vedder, who incidentally tripped over twice in his enthusiasm, thought that the lower (standing) tier was like a festival atmosphere, the next tier was like an arena and the top tier was like being in a stadium. I just think that the 14,000 capacity venue is just a really big theatre (especially with all the seats in) with great sound and a great atmosphere - and the whole place was jumping and singing along by the time they reached their 35th song Alive. There were even 3 Who songs in the set because they were Live at Leeds and Eddie spent a lot of his childhood listening to The Who Live at Leeds and thinking/wishing he was there!
