Abida Parveen (Sindhi: عابده پروين; Urdu: عابدہ پروین; born 20 February 1954) is a renowned Pakistani singer, composer, and musician celebrated for her Sufi music. Also a painter and entrepreneur, Parveen is among the highest-paid singers in Pakistan, often referred to as the 'Queen of Sufi music.'
Born in Larkana into a Sindhi Sufi family, Parveen was trained by her father, Ustad Ghulam Haider, a distinguished singer and music teacher. She is skilled in playing the pump organ, keyboard, and sitar. Parveen began her musical career in the early 1970s, achieving global prominence by the 1990s. Since her first international concert in Buena Park, California, in 1993, she has toured extensively, performing in various international venues, including churches.
Parveen is a regular feature on Pakistan's popular musical show Coke Studio and has judged the pan-South Asia contest show Sur Kshetra. She has appeared on several music reality shows, such as Pakistan Idol, Chhote Ustaad, and STAR Voice of India. Recognized as one of the world's greatest mystic singers, Parveen is listed among The 500 Most Influential Muslims and is known as a "Global Mystic Sufi Ambassador." In recent years, she collaborated with Atif Aslam for a Pepsi commercial and was named a 'Peace Ambassador' by SAARC in 2017.
Parveen's repertoire spans ghazals, thumri, khyal, qawwali, raga, Sufi rock, classical, and semi-classical music, with a specialty in kafi, a solo genre featuring percussion and harmonium. She sings in multiple languages, including Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Arabic, and Persian. One of her notable performances was a Nepali song, "Ukali Orali Haruma," in Kathmandu.
Her powerful, impassioned voice is exemplified in songs like "Yaar ko Humne" from the album Raqs-e-Bismil and "Tere Ishq Nachaya," a rendition of Bulleh Shah's poetry. Parveen received Pakistan's second highest civilian award, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, in 2012 and the highest civilian award, Nishan-e-Imtiaz, in 2021.
