Amyl and the Sniffers are an Australian pub rock and punk rock band based in Melbourne, featuring vocalist Amy Taylor, drummer Bryce Wilson, guitarist Declan Martens, and bassist Gus Romer. They formed in 2016 and quickly made a name for themselves with their high-energy performances and raw sound. The band’s self-titled debut album won the Best Rock Album category at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019.
After Newton left to pursue solo music, Gus Romer joined as the bassist. The band's name is derived from the slang for amyl nitrite, a recreational drug, symbolizing their explosive and short-lived musical style. Influences for their sound include 1970s hard rock bands like Iggy Pop and The Stooges, and The Damned, with Taylor also citing artists such as Minor Threat, AC/DC, and Cardi B. Their second EP, Big Attraction, was released in 2017.
In 2018, the band recorded their debut album with producer Ross Orton. The self-titled Amyl and the Sniffers was released on May 24, 2019, to positive reviews, receiving praise from Pitchfork, NME, and AllMusic. Happy Mag listed Amy Taylor among the "15 Australian female artists changing the game right now."
The band’s self-titled album won the ARIA Award for Best Rock Album in 2019 and was nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2020. Their second studio album, Comfort to Me, was announced in July 2021 and released on September 10, 2021. Singles from the album include "Guided by Angels", "Security", and "Hertz".
In 2022, Amyl and the Sniffers opened for Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day on the European leg of the Hella Mega Tour and toured with The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction in 2023. In May 2024, they released two new singles, "U Should Not Be Doing That" and "Facts".
