Anastacia Lyn Newkirk (/ˌænəˈsteɪʒə/ AN-ə-STAY-zhə; born September 17, 1968) is an American singer-songwriter known for her distinctive voice and successful music career. Her debut album, Not That Kind (2000), featuring the hit single "I'm Outta Love," achieved significant chart success worldwide. She continued her success with Freak of Nature (2001), including singles like "Paid My Dues" and "One Day In Your Life." Her third album, Anastacia (2004), marked a shift to a more rock-influenced sound, producing the popular track "Left Outside Alone."
In 2006, her duet with Eros Ramazzotti, "I Belong to You (Il Ritmo della Passione)," was well-received in Europe. Anastacia switched labels and released Heavy Rotation in 2008, followed by a cover album, It's a Man's World in 2012. Her subsequent albums, Resurrection (2014) and Evolution (2017), included hits like "Stupid Little Things" and "Caught in the Middle." In 2023, she released Our Songs, featuring German songs translated into English.
Anastacia has faced significant health challenges, including Crohn's disease and two battles with breast cancer. Her advocacy in breast cancer awareness earned her the Humanitarian Award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in 2013.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Anastacia is of German and Irish descent. Her parents, Robert Newkirk and Diane Hurley, were performers, which influenced her early interest in the arts. Diagnosed with Crohn's disease at thirteen, she moved to New York City with her family after her parents' divorce. She attended the Professional Children's School in Manhattan, working various jobs while pursuing music.
Anastacia started as a dancer on MTV's Club MTV and appeared in music videos for Salt-N-Pepa. She transitioned to singing, providing backing vocals for artists like Tiffany and Jamie Foxx. Her big break came from MTV's talent show The Cut in 1998, leading to a contract with Daylight Records.
Her debut album Not That Kind was released in 2000, followed by Freak of Nature in 2001. Both albums were successful, especially in Europe and Australia. After her breast cancer diagnosis in 2003, she released her third album, Anastacia (2004), which introduced her "sprock" sound—a mix of soul, pop, and rock.
In 2005, she released her greatest hits album, Pieces of a Dream, and took a break from music to focus on her fashion line with German brand s.Oliver. She returned with Heavy Rotation (2008), although it did not achieve the same success as her previous albums. After overcoming a second breast cancer diagnosis, she released Resurrection (2014) and Evolution (2017), both receiving positive reviews.
Anastacia's latest project, Our Songs (2023), features English translations of popular German songs. Despite health challenges, she continues to be a powerful voice in music and an advocate for breast cancer awareness.
