Atari Teenage Riot formed in 1992 in Berlin, Germany. The original trio consisted of Alec Empire (born Alexander Wilke-Steinhof), Hanin Elias and MC Carl Crack. Alec was already a prolific producer and DJ, but was becoming increasingly disillusioned with the rave scene and the spread of neo-Nazism – the movement had declared trance/techno music “true German music”, so he set out to stop the association.
He gathered like minded individuals to start a political band, and ATR were born. Their sound started as a fusion of breakbeats from funk and rap; heavy guitar riffs and loaded lyrics and slogans, sung and sampled. They signed a record deal in 1993 with Phonogram, but parted ways with the label after a couple of singles due to the band’s constant rule breaking. Using the advance given to them by the record company, Alec Empire started a new label, Digital Hardcore Recordings (DHR). ‘Digital hardcore’ was later used to describe ATR’s sound, so they effectively created their own genre. Atari Teenage Riot tickets were popular among the alternative scene, with people finding their bravery and politics exciting.
Their first album, Delete Yourself!, experimented with rave, jungle and punk genres. Originally titled 1995, it was re-released with a new name and cover the same year. The Future of War was the follow-up, and was faster and heavier than their previous album. Hanin Elias, the only female member of the group, provided more vocals on the new album.
Atari Teenage Riot concerts were known for being chaotic and, as the name would suggest, riotous, which won them lots of young fans. The band members were all arrested in 1999 following a particularly eventful outdoor concert – they were arrested under suspicion of inciting violence after an anti-NATO protest ended in riots, but the charges were later dropped.
In 1999, the band released their third album, 60 Second Wipe Out. Nic Endo had joined the band after touring with them in 1997, and the style was more experimental: less samples, more live instruments that had been fed back and digitally altered. She would later go on to work with Alec on his solo material.
The group decided to take a year break in 2000. Tragically, in 2001, Carl Crack died of an overdose at just 30 years old. He was found in his Berlin apartment with alcohol and unspecified pills in his sytem. "His sudden death has hit me very hard and it is not easy for me to find the right words," Alec Empire said in a statement. "I played in a band with Carl for 10 years. We've been through a lot together in all those times. He was my friend."
In January 2010, it was announced that the band would be reforming for some live shows. Atari Teenage Riot tickets are expected to sell out quickly. They have added a new member to their lineup, MC CX KiDTRONiK, and announced a single, Activate, in March 2010.
