Bill Callahan (born June 3, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter known for his work under the band name Smog and his own name. Emerging from the lo-fi genre with home-recorded tapes, Callahan later signed with Drag City, where he remains today. His early music was experimental and dissonant, featuring poorly tuned instruments and lacking melodic structure. Over time, he transitioned to more professional recordings, collaborating with notable musicians and producers like Jim O'Rourke and John McEntire.
Callahan's music often features simple, repetitive structures and his distinctive baritone voice. His lyrics explore themes of relationships, nature, and politics, delivered with dark irony and emotional complexity. After releasing several acclaimed albums as Smog, he debuted under his own name with Woke on a Whaleheart in 2007, followed by Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle in 2009. His 2011 album Apocalypse and subsequent works received critical praise, with Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (2019) and Gold Record (2020) marking his return to prolific music-making.
Born in Maryland, Callahan spent part of his childhood in England and later settled in Austin, TX. He married photographer and filmmaker Hanly Banks in 2014, and they have two children.
