Brandon Flowers was born in Nevada in 1981. His brother, Shane, who is 12 years his senior, introduced him to music such as Morrissey and The Cure. He has spoken of his feelings of being an outsider at school, because he listened to things like New Order, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and Oasis – while his peers were all into grunge, with bands like Nirvana and Hole. He dropped out of college in 2001, and it was while he was at an Oasis concert that he decided to become a musician.
In 2002, the Killers were born after Flowers answered an advert in a paper and met Dave Keuning, a guitarist. Bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci made up the lineup, and their debut album, Hot Fuss, came out in 2004, and sold 7 million copies, going to number one in the UK, US and Argentina.
2006 saw Flowers and the band release Sam’s Town, which almost perfectly replicated the success of their debut, selling over 7 million copies. They followed it up with their third album, Day and Age, and then in April 2010, Flowers announced he would be embarking on a solo career.
His debut album, Flamingo, was announced later that month and the first single, Crossfire, came out in the UK in June. The video for the song featured the Hollywood actress Charlize Theron. He said during an interview with The Guardian, where he was visibly nervous, "I'm a lot more confident in my handsomeness than my wisdom,” as an explanation for his sudden charm and confidence when placed in front of a camera.
