Change is an Italian-American post-disco group formed in Bologna, Italy, in 1979 by businessman and executive producer Jacques Fred Petrus and musician Mauro Malavasi. Influenced by the disco band Chic, Change was conceived as a studio band with a rotating lineup of musicians. The music was primarily composed and recorded by Italian collaborators before American performers added the vocals in the USA, leading to a distinctive dual Italian-American identity.
The band's debut album, The Glow of Love, released in 1980, was a significant success. The album featured the hit single "A Lover's Holiday" and introduced Luther Vandross's vocals on "Searching" and the title track. These songs collectively spent nine weeks at #1 on Billboard's Club Play Singles chart, making The Glow of Love the #1 disco recording of the year.
Change's second album, Miracles (1981), continued their success with hits like "Paradise" and "Hold Tight," despite Luther Vandross only providing backing vocals. Sharing Your Love (1982) saw the group shift towards R&B and funk, while This Is Your Time (1983) marked a period of instability with key members departing and a decline in commercial success.
In 1984, the band revitalized their fortunes with Change of Heart, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which brought them back to the charts. However, their final album, Turn on Your Radio (1985), did not achieve similar success, leading to the band's dissolution following Petrus's death in 1987.
Efforts to revive Change in the early 1990s were unsuccessful until 2009, when previously unreleased material was issued as Change Your Mind. In 2001, Janet Jackson's hit "All for You" featured a sample from Change's "The Glow of Love."
In 2018, Change reformed with original members Davide Romani and Mauro Malavasi, along with new vocalist Tanya Michelle Smith, releasing a new single "Hit or Miss" and the album Love 4 Love.
Change's innovative production process and memorable hits have left a lasting impact on the post-disco and R&B genres, cementing their place in music history.
