Gok Wan MBE, born on September 9, 1974, is a British fashion consultant, author, television presenter, actor, DJ, and chef. Born in Leicester to an English mother and a Chinese father, he faced challenges such as bullying due to being mixed race, tall, overweight, and gay during his childhood in Whetstone, Leicestershire. These struggles, along with battles with obesity and homophobia, shaped his later work in the media.
Initially training in the performing arts at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Wan transitioned into the fashion business. He worked as a makeup artist and fashion stylist, collaborating with celebrities and contributing to various magazines. In 2006, he gained widespread recognition with his own television show, "How to Look Good Naked," which ran for seven series. He also presented "Say Yes to the Dress Lancashire."
Wan diversified his television career, presenting documentaries on social issues among young people and hosting Chinese cooking shows like "Gok Cooks Chinese" and "Gok's Chinese Takeaway." He has been involved in various fashion-related programs, including "Gok's Fashion Fix" and "Gok's Clothes Roadshow."
Beyond television, Wan has ventured into writing, with books such as "How to Dress: Your Complete Style Guide for Every Occasion," "Through Thick and Thin" (autobiography), "Gok Cooks Chinese," and "Goks Wok."
In addition to his work in the fashion industry, Wan has been involved in acting, making pantomime appearances and lending his voice to animated series. He launched an opera compilation CD titled "Gok's Divas" in 2017 and, in 2020, released his debut single, a cover of the Baby D song "Let Me Be Your Fantasy."
Wan is also recognized for his stand-up tour, "Naked and Baring All," and his contributions to the music scene as a DJ. He has engaged in fashion ventures, including a lingerie range and collaborations with QVC for the creation of the Wuli:Luu collection.
In 2018, Wan co-founded the Golden Chopsticks Awards, and in 2019, he began presenting "Say Yes to the Dress Lancashire." He returned with a new series of "How to Look Good Naked" in 2020. Wan's diverse career reflects his multifaceted talents and his commitment to promoting body positivity and confidence.
