This multi-talented comedian is also an actor and a musician. His rock band, Zero 1, put out their first album in 2006, but since then he has been busy concentrating on other aspects of his career, which has led him establish himself in the acting profession. He is best known for his role as Michael Novotny in series five of the US version of Queer as Folk.
Raised by his divorced father in Chicago, and after some successes in radio talent shows, Sparks left the Midwestern city for Los Angeles and began auditioning for acting jobs. In 1988 he was hired as the host of Treasure Mall, a kid’s game show which made him the youngest game show host in TV history.
In 1999, after a series of presenting jobs, Hal got his big break. As he himself says, “in 1997, I felt I’d strayed too far from stand-up comedy and decided to go at it 100% again. For the next two years, I did stand-up every single night. Yes, Christmas and holidays.” The hard work paid off as he became the host of Talk Soup, a popular TV show in the United States which made fun of celebs who appeared on talk shows. At the same time he was still busy writing gags for more established comedians.
In 2000 he landed the role that made his name in Queer as Folk. Following this success he became hugely in demand as a guest on several pop culture programmes, and was frequently to be found guesting on daytime and evening chat shows.
Throughout the early 2000s he also appeared in minor film roles, the most memorable of which was a cameo appearance in Spiderman 2. But it is in the UK that he is making his name as a stand-up comedian, launching his British career in London where he has been appearing during 2010.
