Jensen Paige McRae (born September 10, 1997) is an American singer-songwriter and poet known for her introspective and socially conscious lyrics. She rose to prominence with her debut singles "White Boy" (2019) and "Wolves" (2020), and her music has been recommended by Rolling Stone, Vulture, Nylon, NPR, and The Fader. Her debut EP, Who Hurt You?, was released on June 25, 2021, followed by her debut studio album, Are You Happy Now?, on March 22, 2022.
Born in Santa Monica, California, and raised in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, McRae is of Black and Jewish descent. She began singing in childhood and studied piano from the age of seven. Influenced by artists like Carole King, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and Alicia Keys, she decided to pursue a music career after attending Grammy Camp during high school. McRae earned a bachelor’s degree in popular music performance from USC Thornton School of Music on a full-ride scholarship.
McRae's music, which she describes as "folk-alternative-pop," has drawn comparisons to folk artists like Tracy Chapman. An alto, she notes that music industry professionals often try to categorize her as R&B or soul due to her race. Her rich, soothing voice and socially conscious lyrics have been praised, and her work often references personal and broader social and political themes.
McRae released her first two EPs, Lighter (2017) and Milkshakes (2018), while in college. After graduating, she released her debut single "White Boy" in 2019, followed by "Wolves" in 2020. In March 2020, she released "The Plague," critiquing the U.S. government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A tweet predicting a Phoebe Bridgers song about vaccination went viral in January 2021, leading McRae to release the parody song "Immune," produced by Rahki. She also collaborated with Joy Oladokun on "Wish You the Best."
Her debut EP Who Hurt You? was released in June 2021, and her debut album Are You Happy Now? followed in March 2022. McRae opened for Noah Kahan on his 2024 Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) Tour.
