Kelly Lee Owens (born 24 August 1988) is a Welsh electronic musician and producer known for her critically acclaimed work in the electronic music scene. Born in Rhuddlan, Flintshire, on the North Wales coast, Owens spent her childhood writing poetry and engaging with nature. As a teenager, she participated in her school choir and played bass and drums.
At 19, Owens moved to Manchester to work at a cancer treatment hospital, where she was inspired by her patients to pursue a career in music. In 2009, she relocated to London, interning at XL Recordings and working at various record stores, including Pure Groove. During this period, she played bass in the indie band The History of Apple Pie and connected with influential musicians like Daniel Avery and James Greenwood, who helped her develop her production skills.
Owens released her self-titled debut album in 2017 through Smalltown Supersound, followed by her second album, "Inner Song," in 2020, and her third studio album, "LP.8," in 2022. Her music blends dream pop and techno pop, earning comparisons to Arthur Russell. She has collaborated with artists such as St. Vincent, Björk, and John Cale.
In addition to her solo work, Owens has remixed tracks for notable artists and composed "Unity," the theme song for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. She also supported Depeche Mode on their North American Memento Mori tour in 2023. In 2024, she signed with Dirty Hit's electronic music imprint, dh2, and announced her upcoming album "Dreamstate," preceded by the single "Love You Got."
Owens' exploration of the connection between music and healing reflects her diverse interests and innovative approach to electronic music.
