Kieran John Callinan, professionally known as Kirin J. Callinan, is an Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist born on January 21, 1986. He gained prominence as a founding member of Mercy Arms and has collaborated with various artists, showcasing a diverse musical output. Callinan is recognized as the enfant terrible of Australia's underground rock music scene, known for his flamboyant public persona, confrontational live performances, and a musical style that blurs the lines between talent, irony, and genuine bad taste.
Raised in Sydney, Callinan's father is Brendan Callinan, the former keyboardist of the Australian pub rock band The Radiators. In 2005, he formed the indie rock band Mercy Arms, contributing to the Australian underground rock music scene until their breakup in 2009. Kirin J. Callinan has also been associated with the Sydney post-punk band The Valentinos.
His solo career took off in 2008 with the self-release of his debut album, "Am I a Woman, Yet?". He gained international attention with his second album, "Embracism," released in 2013 by American record label Terrible Records and XL Recordings in London. In 2017, he released "Bravado," reaching No. 5 on the ARIA Hitseekers Albums Chart.
Callinan is known for his collaborations with a diverse range of musicians, including Mark Ronson, Jimmy Barnes, James Chance, Alex Cameron, Connan Mockasin, Caroline Polachek, and others. His single "Big Enough" in 2017, featuring Jimmy Barnes, became an internet meme due to Barnes' distinctive screaming cameo.
Notably, Kirin J. Callinan has faced controversies, such as a legal issue in 2018 after an incident at the ARIA Music Awards where he exposed himself on the red carpet. Despite this, his musical career continued with the release of "Return to Center" in 2019.
He has contributed to various projects, including collaborations with Mac Demarco and production work for Julian Casablancas & The Voidz. Callinan's involvement in Genesis Owusu's "Smiling With No Teeth" contributed to the album winning multiple awards at the 2021 ARIA Awards.
In 2021, Kirin J. Callinan launched his own record label, Worse Records, a subsidiary of Terrible Records. He continued to release music, including singles like "…in ABSOLUTES" in 2022 and "Eternally Hateful" in October 2023. In the acting realm, he was cast by Jane Campion in the second season of "Top of the Lake" in 2017.
