Omid Djalili (Persian: امید جلیلی; born 30 September 1965) is an Iranian-British actor, comedian, and writer.
Djalili was born in Chelsea, London, to Iranian Baháʼí parents. He attended Holland Park School, where he famously failed his A-level exams six times, and later faked his results to gain entry to Ulster University in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. There, he studied English and theatre studies after being rejected by 16 drama schools.
Djalili’s first major success in stand-up comedy came at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1995 with his show "Short, Fat Kebab Shop Owner's Son", followed by "The Arab and the Jew" with Jewish comedian Ivor Dembina in 1996. He has since performed internationally, including in Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Canada, and the United States, where he had his own HBO Special.
He participated in Comic Relief after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, appeared on Top Gear in 2005, and broke Edinburgh Festival box office records the same year. Djalili became the face of Sky Television’s Saturday night film premières in 2006 and toured the UK with his 'No Agenda' tour in 2007. He also hosted BBC’s political quiz show Have I Got News for You and starred in The Omid Djalili Show on BBC1.
Djalili has won awards for his comedy. These include the EMMA Award, Time Out Award, and LWT Comedy Award for Best Stand-up Comedian, Spirit of the Fringe Award as well as the One World Media Award for his Channel 4 documentary, Bloody Foreigners.
