Placido Domingo was born in Madrid, Spain, and moved to Mexico with his family when he was young. He first performed on stage with his mother in a concert, and made his opera debut in a baritone role in Gigantes y Cabezudos. He also played a minor role in the first Mexican production of My Fair Lady, also providing coaching and conducting duties. He auditioned for the Mexico National Opera as a baritone, but was accepted as a tenor comprimario.
In 1961, he landed a leading role as Alfredo in La Traviata at Monterrey, and the same year made his US debut with the Dallas Civic Opera. In 1962 he played Edgardo with Lily Pons at the Fort Worth Opera, and landed a contract with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv.
In 1965, he auditioned for the New York City Opera, and made his New York debut as B.F Pinkerton at the New York City Opera. His performances were garnering critical acclaim, and he later starred as Don Rodrigo in the opera of the same name.
His official debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York occurred in September 1968. He has opened the season 21 times since, breaking the record set by Enrico Caruso. Since then he has sung at practically every major opera house and festival worldwide.
Throughout the 90s and 00s Domingo sang many more roles such as Wagner’s Parsifal, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Rossini’s II Barbiere di Siviglia as Figaro and Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac. In 1990 he took part in the Three Tenors concert with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti on the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup Final. The three subsequently sang together in concerts around the world, which were a huge commercial success. The Three Tenors phenomenon was thought of as a success to opera for introducing it to a wider audience and Placido Domingo tickets soared in popularity after this.
He has performed at countless events like the Barcelona Olympics and World Cup finals, and he is the General Director of the Los Angeles Opera. Perhaps the most versatile of all living tenors, he has sung 128 opera roles in six languages. He’s won eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards.
