The Skids are a seminal Scottish punk and new wave band from Dunfermline, renowned for their anthemic choruses, poetic lyrics, and explosive live energy. Rising to prominence during the late 1970s, the band played a key role in shaping the sound of post-punk Britain, blending raw power with intelligent songwriting and soaring melodies that set them apart from their contemporaries.

Formed in 1977 by guitarist Stuart Adamson, vocalist Richard Jobson, bassist William Simpson, and drummer Tom Kellichan, The Skids quickly captured attention with their distinctive style – fierce yet articulate, political yet deeply personal. Their debut single Charles and early performances earned critical acclaim, paving the way for their breakthrough with the 1979 hit Into the Valley. The song became a defining anthem of the era, its militaristic rhythm and rallying chorus cementing The Skids’ place in punk history.

Their debut album Scared to Dance (1979) showcased their melodic aggression and literary flair, while follow-ups Days in Europa (1979) and The Absolute Game (1980) expanded their sonic range, introducing elements of art rock and grander arrangements. Tracks like Masquerade, Working for the Yankee Dollar, and Circus Games demonstrated the band’s growth as both musicians and storytellers, earning them a loyal following and widespread respect across the UK and beyond.

After their initial split in the early 1980s, The Skids’ influence continued to grow, with bands such as U2 and Big Country citing them as key inspirations. The group reformed in the 2000s for a series of successful tours and continued their creative resurgence with the albums Burning Cities (2018) and Destination Düsseldorf (2023), both of which captured the energy and defiance of their early work while reflecting the maturity of seasoned performers.

Today, frontman Richard Jobson leads The Skids with the same passion that defined their early years. Their live shows remain powerful, heartfelt celebrations of rebellion and resilience, bringing together generations of fans united by timeless songs and the spirit of punk.
