RY X, born Ry Cuming on May 6, 1988, is an Australian singer, musician, songwriter, and record producer. He was the first artist signed to the Stockholm-based label Dumont Dumont.
Born on Woodford Island, Australia, Ry Cuming developed a passion for surfing and later moved to California. Influenced by Pearl Jam and Jeff Buckley, he started writing music at 16 after hearing Buckley's album Grace.
Cuming's song "Let Your Spirit Fly" featured in the 2006 film Hoot. He moved to Los Angeles and signed with Jive Records, releasing his self-titled debut album on July 20, 2010, and touring with Maroon 5. He won the 2010 Dolphin Awards for "Best Pop Song" and "Best New Artist".
In 2012, Cuming collaborated with Frank Wiedemann on "Howling," released on the German label Innervisions. His EP Berlin (2013) charted in France, Germany, and the UK, and was covered by Sam Smith. In 2014, he formed The Acid with producers Freeland and Steve Nalepa, releasing the album Liminal. He also formed the band Howling with Wiedemann, releasing Sacred Ground on Ninja Tune and Monkeytown Records.
His second album Dawn (2016) received favorable reviews and charted in several countries. Cuming embarked on an extensive tour and performed at major festivals like Barn on the Farm and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
His third album, Unfurl, was released in February 2019, followed by a global tour. Cuming has collaborated with artists like Diplo, ODESZA, Duke Dumont, and Black Coffee, and remixed Rihanna's "Love on the Brain".
His fourth album Blood Moon (2022) was recorded and produced at his home studio in Topanga. It features collaborator Ólafur Arnalds and includes tracks that coincided with Drake's album Honestly, Nevermind, which Cuming contributed to. The album's visuals involved collaborations in Iceland and the Sahara desert.
In September 2023, Cuming released Moths, debuting the official video shot in the Sahara desert.
RY X is known for performing in non-traditional venues, including a Cercle livestream from Brazil's Lençóis Maranhenses National Park and a 2021 livestream from Vibiana Cathedral produced by Driift. In September 2023, he performed at London's St. Paul's Cathedral with the London Contemporary Orchestra, selling out quickly with a waitlist of over 4000 people.
