Artist of the Month: Blossoms (September)

20/08/2024 written by Rebecca

Formed in Stockport in 2013, British indie act, Blossoms have become known for their retro-style, blending modern indie with nostalgic 80’s synth-pop and 90’s Brit-pop. Their fifth studio release Gary is out today! (Friday 20 September 2024)

Led by vocalist Tom Ogden, the five-piece are often compared to bands like Tame Impala, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys. They rose to prominence following the release of their No# 1 debut self-titled record in 2016 which included the singles Charlemagne, Getaway and At Most a Kiss. The album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2017.

Like many acts, their lyrics focus on themes of youth, friendships and love.

2018’s Cool Like You leaned into more of a synth-pop sound, including the singles I Can't Stand It and There's a Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls) , while 2020’s Foolish Loving Spaces explored funk and disco influences, with highlights including The Keeper and Your Girlfriend.

Fourth Album - Ribbon Around the Bomb (2022) was inspired by personal introspection and artistic growth, and explored in detail deeper themes of identity, art, and life.

Produced by Jungle's J Lloyd and The Coral's James Skelly, their fifth offering, Gary - released today - was named after a 8 foot fibre glass gorilla was stolen from a Lanarkshire Garden Centre in early 2023.
