Artist of the Month: Porridge Radio (August)

20/08/2024 written by Rebecca

Brighton indie icons, Porridge Radio were formed in 2014 by lead vocalist and guitarist Dana Margolin, while she was studying anthropology at university.

Margolin began frequenting local open mic nights before assembling the band, with Sam Yardley on drums, Maddie Ryall on bass and Georgie Scott on keyboards. In 2023, bassist Maddie Ryall left the band and was replaced by Dan Hutchins.

Inspired by Dana’s love of the seaside, growing up in Brighton, their DIY-style and raw approach was cemented by the release of their debut album Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers in 2016, which was initially self-released and recorded – mostly - in Margolin’s bedroom.

The group cited musical inspiration from the likes of Pixies, Radiohead and The Cranberries – and as a result their sound spans multiple genres, with elements of indie rock, post-punk, and lo-fi.

Their lyrics are often introspective and explore feelings of self-doubt, existentialism, and emotional turmoil.

Their second record, 2020’s Every Bad, was released via Secretly Canadian and received a Mercury Music Prize nomination. Considered their breakthrough, it is noted for its emotional depth, powerful lyrics, and dynamic arrangements.

Their sound is often characterized by repetitive, mantra-like lyrics, switching between loud and quiet, with a visceral vocal delivery from Margolin. This can be heard in their third album, 2022’s Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky.

Recorded in the Somerset countryside earlier this year, and due out in October 2024, Porridge Radio’s latest LP, Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me enlisted the help of Big Thief and Laura Marling engineer, Dom Monks, and started life as a collection of poems. Exploring themes of love, self-reflection and all the confusing feelings that surface during a breakup.
