Artist Spotlight: grandson

11/02/2026 written by Izzy

Canadian-American artist grandson - born Jordan Benjamin - has always been a fearless artist, one unafraid to take aim at authority, fight the power and let his listeners know exactly how he felt. Following the release of his most recent album INERTIA we decided to shine our spotlight on the alternative artist.

grandson began releasing music back in 2015, however it wasn’t until 2018 that his official debut EP ‘A Modern Tragedy Vol. 1’ came out, which is part of a trilogy of EPs. Prior to this, the platinum-selling artist had made his mark with a string of singles, his most notable being 2017’s ‘Blood/Water’. The track placed him in the mix with some of the great political artists, from Rage Against the Machine to Public Enemy. Throughout 2018, grandson toured with the likes of Nothing But Thieves, Hobo Johnson and more, before releasing the second part of his 'A Modern Tragedy EP'. 'A Modern Tragedy Vol. 3' dropped a year later, garnering a lot of public recognition and praise.

After releasing 2020’s daring theatrical debut album, 'Death of an Optimist', grandson changed the pace with his second album offering. Having amassed a staggering 1 billion streams and counting, the artist gave fans a first look into the album when he released single ‘Eulogy’ in February 2023, notably marking his first new music since 2021. ‘Eulogy’ followed the release of grandson’s 2021 single ‘Drop Dead’ featuring GRAMMY-nominated pop superstar Kesha and Travis Barker. The track originally appeared as a solo effort on grandson’s debut LP 'Death of an Optimist' before being reworked. Rolling Stone proclaimed, “’Drop Dead’ moves effortlessly between atmospheric, pop-leaning verses and a straight-to-the-rafters arena rock chorus.” Additionally, Variety christened it “an empowering call for perseverance in the face of hardship.”

By August 2023 the artist laid himself bare to listeners with album ‘I Love You, I’m Trying.’ The 12-track project was an ambitious achievement that really peels back grandson's public persona. It’s a bold offering that makes a statement. Fast forward to September 2025, and grandson is back making a statement with INERTIA. It's a politically charged protest record, it's energetic, mosh-pit-ready and successfully delivers cathartic, angry anthems about societal decay, technological dependence, and political disillusionment, solidifying grandson's role as a vital voice for progressive angst.
