Ahead of his highly-anticipated, headline London show at the beautiful Union Chapel, we sat down with composer, arranger, and cellist Luka Sulic to discuss his brand new, and debut, solo album Life, being a father, musical inspiration and so much more...
Thank you so much! Yes, becoming a father again has had a profound impact on me. Every time I welcome a new child into the world, it's a reminder of the beauty and fragility of life. It has definitely inspired my music. Children bring so much joy and love which are all reflected in my work.
The process of creating Life was an incredibly personal journey. It started as an exploration of my own emotions and experiences, both as a musician and as a person. I wanted to create something that would connect with others on a deep, emotional level. It’s about embracing both the highs and the lows, the light and the dark moments that shape us. Life, in all its complexity, is what makes us who we are. Nature is also an important inspiration for my work.
Being part of 2Cellos was an incredible experience that taught me so much about pushing boundaries and experimenting with different genres. That influence is definitely present in my solo work. However, with Life, I felt freer to explore my own voice. 2Cellos was more about power, collaboration, and reinvention of classical music, whereas Life feels more personal and introspective. The journey from 2Cellos to this solo project has helped me find my own sound and connect with myself more deeply.
At the London show, audiences can expect an intimate experience that blends raw emotion with some powerful, energetic moments. I’ll be playing tracks from Life with some wonderful world class musicians, and there will be a lot of moments where I really get to connect with the crowd on a personal level. It’s going to be a mix of introspection and celebration, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how people respond to the music live. There’ll also be some surprises along the way – I like to keep things fresh and engaging!
It’s hard to pick just one favorite place, but there are definitely a few standout moments. Performing in places like Tokyo, New York, and London always feels special because of the energy of the crowds and the beautiful venues. One standout memory I’ll always cherish was playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The atmosphere there is just magic, and the crowd was absolutely electrifying.
My roots are a huge part of who I am, and they’ve always influenced my music. Growing up in the Balkans, I was surrounded by rich cultural traditions, folklore, and melodies that have shaped my musical identity.
There are so many incredible artists I’d love to collaborate with! I’ve always admired the work of artists like John Mayer, who blends rock, blues, and soul in such a unique way. Also, someone like Ludovico Einaudi, whose piano compositions are just stunning, would be a dream to work with. I think collaboration is one of the most exciting parts of being a musician – you never know where it could take you. But at the moment I would like to focus an further developing my own voice as a composer.
I’m always discovering new music, and lately, I’ve been really enjoying artists who blend genres and push musical boundaries. I really enjoyed the album from KOAN Sound - Led By Ancient Light. I also listen to a lot of classical and film music on a daily basis.
