Recently, we were kindly invited to the brand new, Tutankhamun: The Immersive Exhibition and were truly blown away. Whether you're a total history buff, or a bit of a novice, this exhibition is an accessible, yet engaging, exploration into the boy King's fascinating history; perfectly balancing education with immersive. Showcasing at London's ExCeL Centre for just a limited time only, Tutankhamun: The Immersive Exhibition is a must-visit, and here's why:
Upon first entering the exhibition you're encompassed by a 360 degree visual of Ancient Egyptian god Anubis. The screen fills the room with vibrant colours of gold and you immediately feel immersed within the experience, the beginning of a journey spanning back thousands of years - and an exploration of the underworld.
From there, a series of highly educational pieces follow - setting the scene. It was fascinating to learn about the beginnings of a dynasty, the battles it had fought, and Tutankhamun's family tree; a society, family, and king all coming to life. Afterwards, we headed into the relics room, where an impressive array of replica artefacts and facsimiles are laid out - including a replica mummy and coffin from Tutankhamun's tomb!
There's a whole array of fascinating objects to explore, from his intricately detailed throne and pieces of furniture to shabtis and shrines; you could spend hours pouring over every detail. These objects helped to further paint the picture of who this King was and how civilisation lived 3,000 years ago.
After taking in the captivating historical details, we were guided by a friendly exhibition assistant into a large room and took a seat. Suddenly, the room transformed, as all four walls, ceiling, and floor were engulfed with the vibrant hues of Ancient Egypt—a larger-than-life, 360 virtual reality experience enveloped us as it spanned up the 8ft walls. Through the stunning visuals and enchanting music - specifically composed for the experience, we embarked on a journey into Ancient Egypt and the afterlife; sailing down the peaceful river Nile, interacting with Ancient Egyptian Gods, and getting up close to the beautiful, ancient landscape - you often had to remind yourself that you weren't really there!
Throughout the immersive experience, we continued to learn fascinating details through engaging voice-overs, which further educated us.
After the awe-inspiring first immersive experience, we were thrilled to find out there were two more waiting for us. Excitement filled the air as we entered the VR headset room, where a friendly assistant helped us gear up. Suddenly, we were King Tutankhamun, embarking on an incredible POV journey into the afterlife. We floated from the tomb, travelled through surreal landscapes, and eventually faced the gods to learn our destiny (I was so engrossed, I actually felt nervous for myself!). The more we looked around, the more details came to life, pulling us deeper into the stunning 7-minute experience. Much like the 360 virtual room, the visuals and music were absolutely mesmerising.
After a few more educational and scene-setting information boards, it was time for the third virtual reality experience and grand finale: the Metaverse. Instantly, we were transported to Ancient Egypt, embodying the role of famed archaeologist Howard Carter, the discoverer of King Tutankhamun's tomb. The breathtaking 360-degree landscapes evolved around us, enabling us to explore the unique spaces as if we were truly there—interacting with books, artifacts, and illuminating the surroundings with lanterns.
Admittedly, having never experienced the Metaverse it did take a few minutes to adjust, but once sorted we were soon captivated. Stepping out of the immersive world, we couldn't help but marvel at this cutting-edge feat of technology, leaving us with unforgettable memories and a lasting impression of ancient history brought to life.
We had a great experience at Tutankhamun: The Immersive Exhibition and would certainly recommend it! Regardless as to whether you're a history buff or not, this is an incredibly accessible exhibition which is not only really informative but also fun, engaging, and interactive - with a whole variation of things to see and do. You'll definitely come away knowing a whole lot about King Tutankhamun but also with some brilliant memories.
The exhibition is only on display until 29 June 2025, so make sure to not miss out and secure your tickets today.
