Bellowhead are one of the most acclaimed and electrifying folk ensembles ever to emerge from the UK, celebrated for their bold reinvention of traditional folk music and their exhilarating, genre-blending live performances. Formed in 2004 by Jon Boden and John Spiers, the band quickly became known for its ambitious scale: an 11-piece collective combining fiddles, brass, percussion, melodeon, strings and more to create a thrilling, orchestral folk sound unlike anything else on the contemporary scene.
Their debut album Burbedge (2006) introduced audiences to their inventive arrangements of folk standards, sea shanties and stories brought to life with theatrical flair. Bellowhead’s breakthrough came with Matachin (2008) and Hedonism (2010), the latter produced by John Leckie and becoming one of the highest-selling folk albums of the century. Tracks such as “New York Girls,” “Roll the Woodpile Down” and “Little Sally Racket” became staples of their raucous live shows, defined by their joyful chaos, intricate musicianship and carnival-like atmosphere.
In 2012, they released Broadside, an album that topped the UK Folk Chart and demonstrated the band’s deepening musical range, adding rock, jazz and world influences to their folk foundations. Their final album before their initial split, Revival (2014), delivered a polished yet exuberant sound and included their much-loved version of “Gosport Nancy.” Throughout their first decade, the band earned multiple BBC Folk Awards and a dedicated fanbase who embraced their ability to make traditional music feel both grand and wildly contemporary.
After parting ways in 2016, Bellowhead thrillingly reunited for limited performances, quickly reminding audiences why they are regarded as one of the greatest live folk acts of all time. Their reunion tours have been met with sold-out venues, ecstatic crowds and a renewed appreciation for their unique place in modern British folk music.
Bellowhead continue to command the stage with a powerful, celebratory presence that turns every concert into a full-bodied musical spectacle. Their ability to fuse tradition with innovation ensures their legacy remains influential and ever-evolving.
