Sir Elton Hercules John CH CBE, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 25 March 1947, is a British singer, songwriter, and pianist. Celebrated for his contributions to music, particularly during the 1970s, John has left a lasting impact on popular music with his distinctive style and showmanship. His prolific partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin is among the most successful in history.
Raised in Pinner, John demonstrated musical talent early on, earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied for five years. He began his career with the blues band Bluesology in 1962 but left in 1967 to pursue a solo career and met Taupin. After working as a session musician and writing songs for other artists, John released his debut album "Empty Sky" in 1969. The following year, he formed the Elton John Band and achieved his first hit single, "Your Song."
John's peak critical success came in the 1970s with a series of chart-topping albums, beginning with "Honky Château" (1972) and continuing through "Rock of the Westies" (1975). He maintained his popularity through the 1980s and 1990s, producing numerous hit singles and albums. John has also excelled in musical films and theatre, composing music for "The Lion King," "Aida," and "Billy Elliot the Musical." His "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour (2018–2023) became the highest-grossing tour ever.
A dedicated HIV/AIDS charity fundraiser since the late 1980s, John established the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, raising over £300 million. He has hosted an annual Academy Awards Party, one of Hollywood's most high-profile Oscar events. John was also involved with Watford Football Club, serving as chairman and director, and remains its honorary life president. Overcoming severe addiction to drugs and alcohol, John has been sober since 1990. He married his long-term partner, David Furnish, in 2014.
John has over fifty top-40 hits on the UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Hot 100, including nine number ones in both countries, and seven consecutive number-one albums in the US. He has sold over 300 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His tribute single to Princess Diana, "Candle in the Wind 1997," is the best-selling chart single of all time. In 2021, he became the first solo artist with UK Top 10 singles across six decades. Among his numerous awards, John has achieved the EGOT status and has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Knighted in 1998, he was appointed a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2020.
