Neurosis are an influential American band from Oakland, California, whose uncompromising approach to heavy music has helped shape post metal, sludge metal and experimental rock. Formed in 1985, the group evolved from their hardcore punk beginnings into a darker and more expansive sound, combining crushing guitars, atmospheric passages, tribal rhythms and intense vocals. Their willingness to push beyond conventional metal structures has earned Neurosis an enduring reputation as pioneers of atmospheric heavy music.
Albums including Souls at Zero, Through Silver in Blood, Times of Grace and A Sun That Never Sets became important landmarks in the development of their distinctive style. Neurosis created music built around tension, repetition and dramatic changes in dynamics, influencing generations of artists across metal, hardcore and experimental music. Their catalogue rewards deep listening, with compositions that often develop gradually before reaching moments of overwhelming intensity.
The live legacy of Neurosis reflects the same uncompromising philosophy found throughout their recordings. Their performances became known for their immense volume, dark atmosphere and immersive presentation, turning lengthy compositions into powerful physical experiences. Rather than relying on conventional rock showmanship, the band focused attention on the collective force of the music, creating an intense environment where sound, rhythm and atmosphere worked together.
