Penguin Cafe is a British ensemble led by composer and musician Arthur Jeffes, creating imaginative instrumental music that combines classical influences with folk, minimalism, ambient music and contemporary experimentation. Jeffes formed Penguin Cafe as a continuation of the creative spirit associated with the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, the influential group founded by his father, Simon Jeffes. While respecting that musical heritage, Penguin Cafe has developed its own identity through intricate compositions, unusual instrumentation and a warm, cinematic sound.
Since forming in 2009, Penguin Cafe have released albums including "A Matter of Life...", "The Red Book", "The Imperfect Sea", "Handfuls of Night" and "Rain Before Seven". Their compositions combine piano, strings and percussion with a wide variety of acoustic and electronic textures, creating music that can feel playful, reflective and quietly uplifting. The ensemble's work demonstrates how contemporary classical music can connect naturally with folk traditions, minimalism and modern alternative sounds.
Penguin Cafe concerts give audiences the opportunity to experience the detail and emotion of this instrumental music in a live environment. The interplay between musicians brings additional depth to the compositions, with delicate passages developing into rich ensemble performances filled with rhythm, melody and atmosphere. For fans of contemporary classical music, instrumental composition and adventurous live performance, Penguin Cafe offer a concert experience that is elegant, imaginative and refreshingly difficult to categorise.
