Biography - Soft Machine

Soft Machine tickets at Eventim.co.uk, your link to everything Soft Machine, concerts, tours, tickets, news and reviews.

Soft Machine, the pioneering British band formed in Canterbury in 1966, are among the most influential names in progressive rock, jazz rock, and experimental music. Originally featuring musicians including Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Mike Ratledge, and Daevid Allen, the group became a cornerstone of the celebrated Canterbury scene. Across landmark albums such as Third, Fourth, and Bundles, Soft Machine continually expanded their musical vocabulary, combining adventurous jazz improvisation, progressive composition, psychedelia, and rock with an uncompromising experimental spirit.

Live, Soft Machine bring their extensive musical legacy to the stage through intricate arrangements, inspired improvisation, and exceptional musicianship. Rather than simply revisiting the past, their concerts showcase the exploratory approach that has defined the Soft Machine sound for decades, allowing compositions to develop organically through interaction between the musicians. Complex rhythms, atmospheric passages, powerful instrumental sections, and moments of spontaneous creativity make each performance an absorbing experience for audiences who appreciate progressive and adventurous music.

For fans of jazz fusion, progressive rock, the Canterbury scene, and boundary pushing live music, a Soft Machine concert offers the opportunity to experience a genuine piece of British musical history in a contemporary setting. Their enduring commitment to experimentation and improvisation has helped secure their reputation as an important influence on generations of musicians, while their live performances continue to demonstrate why the Soft Machine name remains synonymous with musical exploration.
