Soul II Soul is a British musical collective and R&B group known for pioneering a unique blend of soul, funk, reggae, and electronic dance music. The group was formed in London in 1988 by producer and DJ Jazzie B (Trevor Beresford Romeo).
Soul II Soul's breakthrough came with their debut album, "Club Classics Vol. One" (also known as "Keep on Movin'" in the United States), released in 1989. The album included hit singles like "Keep on Movin'" and "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)," both of which became international chart-toppers. These tracks, in particular, are celebrated for their fusion of soulful vocals, catchy melodies, and electronic beats, which became iconic in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The group's frontwoman, Caron Wheeler, was a key contributor to their signature sound, lending her powerful and soulful vocals to many of their tracks.
Soul II Soul's music often carried messages of positivity, unity, and social consciousness, and they were celebrated for their multicultural and inclusive approach to music.
Over the years, the group released several more albums, including "Vol. II: 1990 – A New Decade" and "Volume III: Just Right," solidifying their reputation as pioneers of the British R&B and dance music scenes.
Soul II Soul's influence on the music industry extends beyond their chart-topping hits; they are recognized for their innovative and genre-blending approach, which helped shape the direction of electronic and dance music in the late 20th century. Their legacy continues to inspire artists and producers in various music genres.
