The Alehouse Sessions is an acclaimed musical project created by Norwegian violinist Bjart Eike and Barokksolistene, bringing the lively atmosphere of seventeenth century tavern culture to contemporary audiences. Rather than presenting early music as a formal museum piece, the production explores the songs, instrumental music, stories and communal entertainment that could once be encountered in alehouses across northern Europe.
The performance combines Baroque repertoire with folk music, improvisation, storytelling and theatrical elements, reflecting an era when musicians from different backgrounds exchanged tunes and ideas in busy public houses. The result connects historically informed performance with the spontaneity of a folk session, showing how music from centuries ago can still feel immediate, accessible and full of life.
Live, The Alehouse Sessions turns the concert environment into a communal celebration. Virtuoso musicianship sits alongside humour, storytelling and the informal spirit of musicians gathering around a table, creating an experience very different from a conventional classical concert. For audiences interested in Baroque music, folk traditions, history or inventive theatre, The Alehouse Sessions offers an entertaining journey into the sounds and social world of another age.
