The Ruts are an influential British punk band whose powerful combination of punk rock, reggae and socially conscious songwriting made them one of the most distinctive groups to emerge from the late 1970s UK punk scene. Formed in London, the band developed a sound that combined the urgency of punk with rhythmic influences from reggae and dub, creating music that was both confrontational and highly distinctive. Their original lineup included Malcolm Owen, Paul Fox, John Jennings and Dave Ruffy.
The Ruts secured their place in British punk history with songs including "Babylon's Burning", "Staring at the Rude Boys" and "In a Rut", while their acclaimed debut album The Crack remains an important release from the era. Following the death of Malcolm Owen in 1980, the band's story continued through different incarnations, with Ruts DC carrying the musical legacy forward and introducing their combination of punk energy and reggae influenced rhythms to new generations.
Live, the music of The Ruts delivers the urgency, rhythm and rebellious spirit that made the band so important to British punk. Powerful guitar lines, driving bass and drums and memorable choruses create an atmosphere built for audiences who want their rock music direct and energetic. For punk fans and listeners interested in the roots of alternative British music, seeing these songs performed live offers a chance to experience a catalogue whose influence continues decades after it was first recorded.
