Viagra Boys are a Swedish post-punk band known for their gritty sound, satirical lyricism and chaotic, magnetic stage presence. Formed in Stockholm in 2015, the band quickly carved out a distinctive niche within the modern punk landscape, blending noisy guitars, driving basslines and screeching saxophone with a uniquely absurdist sense of humour. Their music is loud, abrasive, and unashamedly confrontational, but layered with sharp social commentary that sets them apart from their contemporaries.
Their debut album, Street Worms (2018), introduced audiences to their unfiltered, razor-edged style. Tracks like Sports and Crime Scene became underground hits, showcasing the band’s ability to merge blistering energy with cutting satire. With snarling vocals from frontman Sebastian Murphy, the album established the group as one of the most exciting and unpredictable forces in alternative music.
In 2021 they followed up with Welfare Jazz, a record that pushed their sound into new territory while retaining the grit and eccentricity fans loved. Songs such as Ain’t Nice and Girls & Boys revealed a band unafraid to experiment, weaving in elements of noise rock, jazz punk and sardonic storytelling. The album was widely acclaimed, further cementing their reputation for both chaos and craft.
Their next release, Cave World (2022), offered an even sharper edge, diving into themes of misinformation, masculinity and societal absurdities with biting wit and explosive ferocity. Tracks like Punk Rock Loser and Troglodyte demonstrated their knack for pairing social critique with relentless, high-voltage instrumentation. The album reaffirmed Viagra Boys as leaders in the new wave of confrontational, intelligent punk rock.
Viagra Boys’ live shows are a major part of their cult following. Their concerts are wild, humorous, unpredictable and intensely physical experiences, driven by Murphy’s charismatic, often unhinged performance style and the band’s tight but chaotic musicianship. Fans and critics alike praise their ability to turn disorder into art, crafting performances that are as entertaining as they are cathartic.
Now recognised as one of the most vital voices in contemporary punk, Viagra Boys continue to evolve while holding firmly onto the raw, irreverent energy that launched them. Their music speaks to a generation seeking truth amid chaos, blending satire, noise and explosive creativity into something entirely their own.
