Artist Of The Month: James (October 2025)

16/10/2025 written by Rebecca

If the name James doesn’t immediately ring a bell, don’t worry - it’s not because they’re forgettable. In fact, they’re the opposite.

James are one of those rare British bands that have managed to be both gloriously offbeat and wildly anthemic, a group that can make you cry, dance, and question your life choices all in the same song.

Formed in Manchester in the early ’80s, right in the thick of the post-punk and emerging indie scene, they started off as the awkward cousin at the Factory Records family reunion. They were labelmates with Joy Division and New Order for a bit, but while those bands brooded in shadow and synths, James were out there yelping, experimenting, and doing things their own eccentric way.

Their early sound was jangly, nervy, and spiritual in a messy, human kind of way. Singer Tim Booth, easily one of the most distinctive frontmen in British music, would whirl around on stage like a man halfway between enlightenment and electrocution. His lyrics? Equal parts mystic poetry and therapy session.

Then came the first big hit, Sit Down. Released in 1991, it became an instant anthem, not just for indie kids but for anyone who’d ever felt like an outsider. It’s the kind of song that makes strangers throw their arms around each other at festivals. Simple, raw, communal and impossible not to sing along to.

But the band didn’t stop there. The ’90s brought a string of lush, ambitious albums like Laid (produced by Brian Eno) and Whiplash, filled with songs that balanced fragility and fire. Laid, the single with its cheeky falsetto and innuendo-laden lyrics, became a surprise hit in America, sneaking James into college radio playlists alongside Nirvana and R.E.M.

What’s wild is how James have never really gone away. They’ve taken breaks, yes, but they keep coming back; wiser, still weird, and somehow even better. In recent years, they’ve released powerful albums like Living in Extraordinary Times and All the Colours of You, proving they’re not just a nostalgia act but a band still reckoning with the modern world. In 2024, the group released their 19th studio album, Yummy, and announced thier biggest arena tour to date earlier this year, which will take place throughout spring 2026.

A James gig is part concert, part communal therapy, part spiritual awakening. Booth still dances like he’s shaking off his own soul, and the crowd still feels like a single, breathing organism.

Next time you’re flipping through playlists and want something that’s heartfelt, unpredictable, and utterly alive, it might be time to give James a listen. Whether it’s the ethereal Sometimes, the haunting Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), or the timeless Sit Down, you’ll find yourself humming along, maybe even feeling a little lighter.

Because that’s the magic of James, they remind you that being human - awkward, emotional, glorious and imperfect - is something worth singing about.
