Artist of the Month: Wunderhorse (October 2024)

20/08/2024 written by Rebecca

Formed in 2020 by guitarist and singer-songwriter Jacob Slater, rock project, Wunderhorse initially started life as a solo venture, before becoming a full band in 2021. Slater (vocals, guitar) was joined by Harry Tristan Fowler on guitar, Peter Woodin on bass and Jamie Staples on drums.

Slater, previously fronted the punk band Dead Pretties, who disbanded in 2017. With Wunderhorse, Slater explores a more introspective and alternative rock style, blending indie, grunge, and folk styles, with the band often drawing comparisons to the likes of Radiohead, Elliott Smith, and Nirvana, thanks to its raw, emotional, and sometimes gritty sounds.

Moving away from the punk aggression that defined his previous work, Slater started writing songs with a focus on lyrical depth and layered melodies. The project gained significant attention with its debut album, Cub, released in 2022, which explores themes of relationships, self-discovery and mental health. In 2022, Wunderhorse toured as a supporting act multiple other acts, including Irish alternative band Fontaines D.C. as well as Pixies, FoalsSam Fender & more.

The band will once again open for Fontaine's D.C. throughout Europe this November, as well as for Sam Fender during his upcoming People Watching UK Tour later this year, in December.

Earlier, in August 2024, Wunderhorse unveiled their second album, Midas, to critial acclaim, a raw and energetic release which offers a fresh and thrilling reintroduction to their sound. To celebrate this record, the band also announced thier only UK date so far in 2025 - at Alexandra Palace next May.
