Britain loves an underdog. And there are none more underdoggish than Canadian heavy metallers Anvil, whose recent comeback has been attributed largely to the success of the rockumentary starring them and directed by uber-fan Sacha Gervasi, but as we Brits know, the real reason for the success is that the Underdog Never Gave Up! The heart warming tale of best friends Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner who played together since childhood and never really made the bigtime has stuck in our national consciousness and the boyish delight on their faces when they play music together makes for an engaging watch.
I have seen Anvil for a 10ner two years ago in a Wigan night club. Only about 100 people in the audience, but the guys played like there was no tomorrow. I bought my first Anvil record back in 1982, a really much underrated band, and they still are, nearly forty years later. Someone should really give these guys a break. Of course I already have my ticket for the Manchester gig, but it is a disgrace that they have to play the Academy 3. These guys would deserve much better, and especially bigger...
