Bassem Raafat Mohamed Youssef, born on March 21, 1974, is an Egyptian comedian, television host, and former surgeon. He gained prominence as the host of "Al Bernameg," a satirical comedy show focused on Egyptian politics, which aired from 2011 to 2014. Often referred to as "Egypt's Jon Stewart," Youssef's comedic career began with "The B+ Show" in 2011, inspired by the Egyptian revolution.
Youssef graduated from Cairo University's Faculty of Medicine with a major in cardiothoracic surgery in 1998. He practiced as a surgeon for 13 years before transitioning to comedy. His media success includes hosting guests like Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" and achieving high viewership for "Al Bernameg" on various channels.
Youssef faced challenges and controversies, including legal issues and the termination of "Al Bernameg" due to political pressure in Egypt. Following his departure from Egypt, Youssef pursued various projects, including collaborations in the United States. He became a resident fellow at Harvard's Institute of Politics, collaborated on the documentary "Tickling Giants," and hosted the International Emmy Awards in 2015.
In 2016, Youssef launched "Democracy Handbook with Bassem Youssef," a digital series. His recent appearance on "Piers Morgan Uncensored" in 2023, discussing the Israel–Hamas conflict and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, garnered significant attention.
Throughout his career, Youssef received accolades such as being named one of Time magazine's "100 most influential people in the world" in 2013 and receiving the International Press Freedom Award in 2013. Al Bernameg was recognized by South by Southwest as the first successful internet-to-TV conversion story in the Middle East.
