Natasha Khan, born on October 25, 1979, known by her stage name Bat for Lashes, is an English singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Born to an English mother and a Pakistani father, Khan's upbringing was influenced by her diverse cultural background and her family's involvement in squash, with notable members including squash players such as her grandfather Nasrullah Khan and her uncle Jahangir Khan. Despite facing racial abuse during her school years due to her Pakistani heritage, Khan found solace in music and self-taught herself to play various instruments, including the piano, guitar, and others.
After completing her education and working various jobs, Khan settled in Brighton in 2000 to pursue music and visual arts at the University of Brighton. It was during this time that she began developing her distinctive sound, blending elements of folk music with electronica. In 2006, she released her debut album "Fur and Gold," which garnered critical acclaim and earned her a Mercury Prize nomination. Subsequent albums, including "Two Suns" (2009), "The Haunted Man" (2012), "The Bride" (2016), and "Lost Girls" (2019), further solidified her reputation as a unique and innovative artist.
Throughout her career, Khan has explored various musical styles and themes, often incorporating personal experiences and imaginative storytelling into her music. She has received widespread recognition for her creativity and artistry, earning multiple award nominations and establishing herself as one of the leading voices in alternative music. Additionally, Khan has collaborated with other artists and bands, including her role as the vocalist for Sexwitch, a collaboration with the rock band Toy and producer Dan Carey.
