enjamin Charles Elton AM (born 3 May 1959) is a British comedian, actor, author, playwright, lyricist, and director. A prominent figure in London's alternative comedy movement of the 1980s, he co-wrote the sitcoms "The Young Ones" and "Blackadder," while also performing as a stand-up comedian. His early comedic style was known for its left-wing political satire. Over the years, Elton has published 17 novels and penned several musicals, including "The Beautiful Game" (2000), "We Will Rock You" (2002), "Tonight's the Night" (2003), and "Love Never Dies" (2010), a sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera." His novels span dystopian, comedy, and crime genres.

Elton was born in Fitzrovia, London, to Mary (née Foster), an English teacher, and Professor Lewis Elton, a physicist and educational researcher. He is related to historian Sir Geoffrey Elton and singer Olivia Newton-John. Raised in Catford, south London, and later Guildford, Surrey, Elton discovered his passion for theatre in his youth and was actively involved in amateur dramatics. He attended Stillness Junior School and Godalming Grammar School before studying theatre at South Warwickshire College and later drama at the University of Manchester, graduating with upper second-class honours in 1980.

Elton began his career with the BBC, becoming their youngest scriptwriter. He gained initial fame co-writing "The Young Ones" and later "Blackadder" with Richard Curtis. His stand-up career flourished with regular performances on "Saturday Live," later "Friday Night Live," and he hosted his own series, "Ben Elton: The Man from Auntie." In addition to his television work, Elton wrote and produced several other sitcoms, including "The Thin Blue Line" and "Upstart Crow." He also presented the Channel 4 documentary "Ben Elton: The Great Railway Disaster" in 2023 and returned as host of a revived "Friday Night Live" in 2022. Elton's contributions to comedy and entertainment have made him a significant figure in British popular culture.
