Chappell Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri, is an American singer-songwriter known for her unique blend of pop with dark undertones. Inspired by 80s synth pop and early 2000s hits, her music is often described as "campy" and heavily influenced by drag queens. Roan began her musical journey at a young age, learning to play the piano and starting to perform publicly as a teenager.
At 17, Roan uploaded her original song "Die Young" to YouTube, catching the attention of Atlantic Records, who subsequently signed her. She released her debut single "Good Hurt" in 2017, followed by the EP "School Nights" later that year. Roan's breakout moment came in 2020 with the release of "Pink Pony Club", a song inspired by her experiences at a gay bar in West Hollywood. Despite its success, Atlantic Records dropped her from the label shortly after.
Undeterred, Roan continued to pursue her music independently, collaborating with producer Dan Nigro. In 2022, she released "Naked in Manhattan", her first independent single, followed by "Femininomenon" and "Casual". Her resilience and unique sound caught the attention of Island Records, leading to a record deal and the release of her debut album "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" in 2023.
