Children of Bodom formed in 1993 as IneartheD. Alexi Laiho, the guitarist, and Jaska Raatikainen, the drummer, were childhood friends and had shared an interest in heavy metal – especially death metal. They recruited Samuli Miettinen on bass and the finished lineup recorded a demo (Implosion of Heaven) that year.
Samuli’s family moved from Finland to the US in 1995, cutting short his time in the band. Alexi began writing songs after Samuli’s departure, and they recruited a rhythm guitarist, Alexander Kuoppala. Henkka "Blacksmith" Seppälä replaced Samuli on bass and backing vocals. They decided to record an independent, self-funded album with Janne Wirman on keyboards. Their album, Something Wild, was released under a new name: Children of Bodom. The name was inspired by the Lake Bodom murders, an infamous multiple homicide in Finland in 1960.
A Children of Bodom tour began in February 1998, and another in September. Children of Bodom tickets were growing in popularity after they opened for Dimmu Borgir and were featured on a Spinefarm Records compilation album. Their second studio album, Hatebreeder, was championed by the single Downfall. Children of Bodom tickets for concerts in Japan with Sinergy and In Flames sold out.
Their next album was called Follow the Reaper, which was released in 2000. In 2002, they began work on their follow-up, Hate Crew Deathroll. This was released in 2003, and went to the top of the Finnish charts. The album eventually went platinum. The Finnish Metal Music Awards recognised the band and they won Finnish Band of the Year.
Children of Bodom tickets for their world tour went on sale in 2003. The tour began that year and sold out many venues. After the tour concluded, they returned to the studio and began work on the EP Trashed, Lost & Strungout. They recorded a parody of Oops!...I Did it Again by Britney Spears. In 2005, the album Are You Dead Yet? was released, which was more experimental than their previous albums and became their most commercially successful.
In 2006, The Unholy Alliance tour took place in Europe and the US, which featured Children of Bodom, Slayer, Lamb of God, In Flames, Thine Eyes Bleed and Mastodon. They also played at the Monsters of Rock Festival, on the same stage as Ozzy Osbourne and Megadeth.
Blooddrunk, their sixth album, came out in April 2008. Children of Bodom tickets were by then in high demand, and they were frequently playing gigs with heavyweights like Iron Maiden and Sonata Arctica. They were in the lineup for Download Festival in June 2007,playing a mix of their back catalogue and new album. Their Blooddrunk tour was a huge success and they began work on their next album. Children of Bodom tickets for their shows with Black Label Society sold out, and they have stated that their new album will be out in 2011. The Ugly World Tour 2011 tickets are on sale now.
