Chimaira are a heavy metal band known for their dramatic line-up changes between albums and heavy groove sound, which has been compared to bands such as Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, Fear Factor and Meshugga.
Chimaira were founded in 1998 by Jason Hager, a rhythm guitarist who partnered with vocalist Mark Hunter. The two men recruited Jason Genaro on drums, Andrew Ermlick on bass and scheduled some jam sessions to determine whether or not they could realistically produce quality music. After a few sessions they decided they needed a more aggressive guitar and so recruited Rob Arnold. They recorded a demo in 1999 and replaced Genaro with drummer Andols Herrick, then spent the majority of 1999 performing a number of live shows and selling concert tickets around the United States. They also recorded a second demo which was promoted on college radio stations and eventually led to them landing a spot on the USA Network show Farmclub.com, at which point they were immediately signed to Roadrunner Records, who could see the potential Chimaira concerts had.
Their debut album was released in 2001 under the title Pass Out of Existence. The lineup continued to change drastically, and in 2002 the fragments of the band returned home to begin recording their second album, The Impossibility of Reason, which included an entire making-of DVD called The Dehumanizing Process. Again the lineup changed drastically, and eventually they released their third album, the self-titled album, in 2005. Their next album was put out by Ferret Records, and released in 2007 under the title Resurrection, songs from which are fan favourites at Chimaira concerts.
Their latest album is called The Infection and was released in April 2009. Chimaira tickets for shows in support of The Infection were sold out for almost every show and the band toured throughout Europe and the United States in 2009, eventually continuing on to Australia in 2010 with Double Dragon along as a supporting act. They then supported Trivium on a 16 date tour across the United Kingdom that began in March of 2010. They also performed at the Mayhem Festival along with Hatebreed, Shadows Fall and Winds of Plague, and their latest DVD release called Coming Alive is out now. The DVD contains two discs and one CD so fans get a variety of music videos, live footage and documentaries, as well as music.
