Death Cafe is an international social movement that encourages open and thoughtful conversations about death, dying and the meaning of life. Founded through the work of Jon Underwood in the UK, inspired by the ideas of Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz, the Death Cafe concept creates welcoming spaces where people can discuss a subject that is often avoided in everyday conversation. Rather than offering counselling or a structured educational programme, Death Cafe gatherings focus on respectful discussion, curiosity and the exchange of personal perspectives.
Since the first Death Cafe event in London in 2011, the concept has expanded internationally, bringing together participants from different backgrounds, cultures and generations. Meetings are typically organised around informal group conversations, often accompanied by tea and cake, creating a relaxed environment for discussing serious and deeply human questions. Topics may include mortality, grief, personal beliefs, cultural traditions and the ways awareness of death can influence how people approach life. The movement operates without a prescribed agenda, allowing participants to shape conversations through their own experiences and interests.
Attending a Death Cafe event offers an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue within a supportive and respectful group setting. Participants are encouraged to listen, reflect and share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with, making each gathering unique. The experience can encourage new perspectives and a deeper appreciation of the different ways people understand mortality. For anyone interested in thoughtful conversation, personal reflection and exploring one of life's most universal subjects, Death Cafe provides an accessible space for discussion and connection.
