Duster, an American indie rock band from San Jose, California, was formed in 1996 and played a significant role in the slowcore and space rock revival movements of the 1990s. The group primarily consisted of multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber, and Jason Albertini until Albertini's departure in 2022.
The band's history began with Parton and Amber, who had previously collaborated in bands Mohinder and Calm. In 1996, they released two cassettes, "On the Dodge" and "Christmas Dust," along with a 7" titled "Transmission, Flux" in 1997. The addition of Jason Albertini as a drummer in 1997 marked a pivotal moment, leading to their debut album, "Stratosphere," in 1998. Albertini's role expanded, and he became a permanent member by the release of "Contemporary Movement" in 2000.
After a lengthy hiatus, Duster reunited in 2019 with the release of the box set "Capsule Losing Contact" and a standalone single, "Interstellar Tunnel." In the same year, they dropped their third self-titled studio album. The band continued to evolve, releasing their fourth studio album, "Together," in 2022. However, it was revealed that Jason Albertini had departed to focus on his indie rock project, Helvetia, citing mental health reasons.
Duster's musical style is often associated with indie rock, space rock revival, and slowcore. Their unique sound is characterized by a lo-fi quality achieved through recording on inexpensive and older equipment like cassette decks. The band's influence extends to various side projects, including Valium Aggelein, pseudonyms like Eiafuawn and the Soviets, and individual pursuits by members like Helvetia by Albertini and releases by Amber under his name and Lonnie Win.
